There’s a pretty cool article on a WWII Mercedes limo that is actually a wood burning furnace over on eBay motors blog. Thought I’d post it here on the off chance that it hadn’t already been posted here back in November when it was written.

They are wood gas cars. Look up French ww2 wood gas and there are enthusiasts in Scandinavia these days with wood gas Volvo etc. I saw a wood gas Mitsubishi jeep in Japan last year.

Wood gas powered vehicles were very common in Finland during WWII. Selling fuel to civilians was limited but we had a lot of wood. The popularity fell after the war but some cars have survived with their equipment in usable condition.
Lately some enthusiasts have built slightly more modern wood gas powered vehicles. Couple of my friends built a bit scary looking wood gas cars. Here’s one that actually still belongs to our prime minister. And yes, the prime minister of Finland really does own a wood gas powered El Camino.
Since that was taken it has been painted grey but that was the best picture of it that I could find. It has an SBC 350 with a blower and it uses around 40 kilograms of dry wood per 100 km. That weird exhaust stack is used when the gasifier is firing up.
